Lens Care & Maintenance: Cleaning, Saltwater Protection, & StorageUpdated 2 hours ago

Proper care and storage ensure your replacement lenses and sunglasses maintain peak optical clarity and coating durability. Following these simple steps protects against scratches, saltwater corrosion, and frame damage over time.

Step-by-Step Cleaning Instructions

To prevent surface scratches and preserve protective lens coatings, follow this 3-step cleaning method:

  1. Blow Off Loose Particles & Rinse:

    • Always blow off dust, sand, or debris before wiping.

    • If particles remain or if you've been in saltwater, rinse your sunglasses under clean, fresh water.

    • For stubborn oils or grime, wash gently using a mild, scent-free soap (free from micro-particles or moisturizing oils).

  2. Never Clean Dry (Always Wet Lenses First):

    • Wiping a dry lens traps dust particles, turning them into sandpaper across the lens surface.

    • Use an alcohol-free cleaning spray (such as Fuse Lenses Cleaning Spray) or fog the lenses with your breath in a pinch. Avoid alcohol-based sprays as they can degrade lens coatings and frame finishes over time.

  3. Use the Right Microfiber Cloth:

    • Clean exclusively with a dedicated microfiber lens cloth or the Fuse microfiber storage pouch

    • Never use T-shirts or paper towels. Wood fibers in paper towels and rough cotton threads in shirts cause micro-abrasions and scratches.

Saltwater & Ocean Air Protection

Warning: Mirror coatings contain real metallic elements that are vulnerable to saltwater corrosion.

  • 5x Faster Corrosion: Saltwater corrodes metal frame components, and mirror finishes corrode 5 times faster than fresh water.

  • 10x Faster Air Corrosion: Salty, humid ocean air accelerates corrosion up to 10 times faster than standard atmospheric air.

  • Mandatory Fresh Water Rinse: Always rinse your sunglasses and lenses under clean, fresh water immediately after exposure to ocean water, beach air, or sweat. Allowing salt water to dry on the lens traps salt crystals that scratch surfaces and dissolve metallic mirror layers.

Anti-Fog Spray Directions

Fuse Anti-Fog Spray protects and defogs lenses for high-intensity activities like skiing, paintball, hockey, or everyday temperature changes.

  • How to Apply:

    1. Liberally spray your microfiber cloth with Fuse Anti-Fog Spray.

    2. Wipe both the front and back surfaces of the lenses evenly.

    3. Reapply weekly, or after every deep cleaning session.

Storing Sunglasses & Extra Lenses

Sunglasses Storage

  • Store sunglasses in a hard case or the included microfiber protective pouch.

  • Avoid placing glasses on vehicle dashboards or loose in purses, as movement against keys and coins causes deep scratches and bent frames.

  • Ensure cases fit properly (neither too loose, which permits jostling, nor too tight, which rubs lenses during closure).

  • Do not store coins, lip balm, or other loose items inside your glasses case.

Backup Lens Storage

  • Store extra lenses in the pull-out drawer lens case provided with your Fuse order.

  • Keep extra lenses inside their protective plastic bags, storing a maximum of 2 pairs per drawer case.

  • Temperature Control: Store extra lenses in a climate-controlled space (such as an indoor closet). Avoid keeping spare lenses in hot vehicles, as extreme heat or freezing cold degrades lens laminates and multi-layer coatings over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Can I use alcohol wipes or window cleaner on my Fuse lenses?

    • No. Harsh chemicals and alcohol-based cleaners degrade anti-reflective, hydro-oleophobic, and mirror coatings over time. Use an alcohol-free lens spray or mild soapy water.

  • Why did my mirror coating start peeling after a beach trip?

    • Mirror finishes contain metallic components that corrode rapidly when saltwater dries on the lens. Always rinse lenses with fresh water immediately after ocean exposure.

  • Can I leave my spare lenses in my car's glove box?

    • No. Extreme temperature shifts inside a vehicle damage lens coatings. Store extra lenses in a temperature-controlled indoor room.
